Ingredients

  • 1 pound Italian bread loaf cubed
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 1 onion diced
  • 4 celery stalks diced
  • 1 granny smith apple peeled, cored, and diced
  • 2 tsp poultry seasoning
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound ground breakfast sausage
  • 1 cup chicken broth

Instructions

  • Place the cubed bread pieces on a large baking sheet and allow to dry for 1-2 days (see note below for alternative)
  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F
  • Cook ground breakfast sausage in a skillet over medium heat until cooked through. Set aside
  • In a dutch oven over medium heat, melt the butter. Add onion, celery, and apple and cook until soft about 8-10 minutes. Add the poultry seasoning and salt and pepper to taste and cook 2 minutes longer. Mix in the cooked breakfast sausage. Remove from heat
  • Stir in bread bread cubes until evenly coated. Moisten with chicken broth and mix well. Place dressing into a 9×13 inch casserole dish and bake in preheated oven for 30 minutes

Notes

If you don’t want to dry out your bread for 1-2 days.  Simply bake the bread cubes on a baking sheet in a 200 degree F preheated oven for 20-30 minutes, shaking the pan halfway through.  You can store dried cubes in a Ziploc bag until ready to use.
