Classic Chocolate Cake
This is one of my go to recipes when I need to whip up a homemade, simple, delicious chocolate cake.

Ingredients
Cake
- 2 cups white sugar
- 1 3/4 cups flour
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 1 cup hot coffee
Frosting
- 1/2 cup butter melted
- 2/3 cup cocoa powder
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/3 cup milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
For the cake
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease two 9 inch cake pans. Place parchment paper in the bottom of each cake pan if available and grease paper
- In a large bowl, mix together sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Add eggs, milk. oil, and vanilla. Mix with electric mixer for a couple minutes. Stir in the hot coffee and pour into prepared cake pans. Batter is supposed to be thin
- Bake for 30-35 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean when inserted into center of the cake. Cool in pans before inverting onto cake platter.
For the frosting
- Stir cocoa powder into melted butter
- Using electric hand mixer add powdered sugar and milk alternately until desired consistency. Mix in vanilla
To assemble cake
- Place one layer of cake on the cake platter. Spread about 1/2 cup frosting on top and evenly cover.
- Place second cake layer on frosting. Frost remaining top and sides of cake. Use offset spatula if available
Notes
You may also use 13×9 inch cake pan. Bake for about 35-40 minutes, cool completely, and frost.
