Homemade Vanilla Extract
Two ingredients is all you need to make high quality vanilla extract. Don't pay an arm and a leg for pure vanilla extract at the grocery store when you can make it at home for a fraction of the price. I prefer storing the extract in a flip-top glass bottle, but any jar or bottle with do. Just make sure it's washed, dried, and has a tight fitting seal.
Ingredients
- 5 vanilla beans
- 1 cup vodka must be at least 70 proof
- 8 oz clean dry bottle or jar with tight seal
Instructions
- Using a sharp knife, split vanilla beans down the center just enough to expose the beans. Place the beans in prepared bottle or jar
- Using a funnel, pour the vodka into the bottle to submerge the beans. Tightly seal bottle and store in a cool dry place (pantry or cupboard)
- Vigorously shake bottle every couple days. Steep extract a minimum of 6 weeks before using. The longer it steeps, the better and richer the vanilla flavor will be
